First impressions- The beautiful, elegant and stylish exterior gives way to a slightly disappointing interior where the decor is somewhat dated, but all the staff were extremely well presented. The times for afternoon tea are from 2-6 but, although we arrived early, there was no problem. We had called beforehand to book but were advised it was not necessary.
Our drinks order was taken straight away but the drinks took about 15 mins. to arrive even though the place didn't seem that busy. The only thing I'd say about the price is that there is a big jump from basic €29 (for 2) to champagne €42.95 (for 2) and maybe they should offer a prosecco option in between!
The presentation of the tea was lovely with a classically typical afternoon tea sandwich selection. They tasted good, the proportion/ratio of each filling was cleverly worked out with no one flavour dominating. The smoked salmon was very tasty - typically this comes on top of soda bread, but actually works in a brown bread sandwich - and the chicken and pesto was really good.
Pastries included some very nice brownies - extremely rich but, if you're a chocolate lover, you'll be in heaven. Scones were very tasty and warm (always a sign of a good afternoon tea) and the mini eclairs were nice if a tad "soggy".
The sponge cake unfortunately was a little dry,
Coffees / capuccinos and teas were great.
The food and the overall experience was lovely; the only downside we found was that, although plenty of staff were around, they didn't seem overly interested. None of them checked how our meal was going and getting their attention was harder than it should have been. Also, when we asked for a "doggy bag", we were handed a large sheet of tin foil and told to take what we wanted in that !!
