On entering this hotel we were immediately struck by its well designed, modern interior. We were greeted straight away and shown to our table which was located in the main foyer. The foyer also houses the reception which is next to the brass bar and is therefore quite a busy area, not really conducive to a long, relaxing afternoon tea even though we were seated beside a welcoming, open fire.
The service was efficient and the staff very helpful and friendly. We ordered 2 afternoon teas which was just as well as we were informed that they don't serve individual teas - a heads up for anyone considering going solo!
The afternoon yeas came out beautifully presented, and the waitress went through each item with us. We started with the sandwiches; ham and cheese with a little honey mustard which really gives this basic fare an added kick not to mention flavour, chicken and goats cheese (but not too goaty) - very pleasant, smoked salmon nicely served on little circular bread slices - lovely, and beef which was tasty and not at all dry.
The scones came out warm and were homemade, with whipped cream on the side. They already had melted butter on them; nice to see the effort but a little presumptuous as not everyone likes butter! There was no jam. The fruit cake was really tasty and also homemade,
On to the best part: the desserts. The brownie, arrived warm but unfortunately was a little too dry,
Apple cinnamon cake was definitely something a bit different, and the raspberry mousse was just amazing. It did come without a spoon but, even if there were no spoons in the hotel, we would have found a way to eat it, it was that good.
The lemon tart very nice and soft - definitely went down easily, and the passion fruit mousse with a sponge base was deliciously fruity.
In conclusion, the price of this afternoon tea, for what you get, is fantastic. It would suit all tastes and there are plenty of sandwiches and desert to fill you up. The service is great and extremely friendly! The location is easily accessible but, its being right beside a main road prevents it from having the most ideal setting for an afternoon tea. Nevertheless we found the experience very enjoyable and would definitely recommend it.
